Musashi spent many years studying Buddhism and swordsmanship. He was an accomplished artist, sculptor, and calligrapher.

Miyamoto Musashi was born in 1584 in Harima, Japan. It is located near the southern part of Japan in the Hyogo prefecture.

Musashi is best known to the western world as the author of The Book of Five Rings, known as "Gorin no sho" in Japan. Throughout his early life, Musashi traveled to experience and develop his swordsmanship. In all, it is said Musashi had encountered 60 duels in which he was undefeated in all of them.
